Why play games?

Games are challenging and fun and can provide a basis for the development of many skills for life. Some games emphasise participation, challenge and cooperation whilst others emphasise individual problem-solving. Most games combine these concepts providing a rich space for learning where students can grow and develop skills in an environment that is safe where failure is part of the learning experience.
Here are some of the fundamental reasons why we play games:
  • to learn, test and grow (fundamental adaptive motivation)
  • to exercise and imrove (mentally or physically)
  • to prove oneself (safely, free of ‘failure’)
  • to be acknowledged or recognised (for ourselves/personality)
  • to participate and socialise (social lubrication)
  • to explore fantasies (to escape from reality)
  • to rebel (against social, legal, or other constraints; safely)

But is there something fundamentally different about digital games?
